The use of the semi-structured cognitive interview or the modified-NICHD protocol is encouraged in Arizona. These interview protocols consist of the following steps:
- Rapport/language sample/narrative practice/guidelines
- Narrative invitation about the topic of concern
- Elaboration of the narrative account using open-ended questions
- Direct, non-leading questions as needed to elicit details
- Neutral closure
